Records Request / FOIL
Copies of Police Records and Reports are generally available within 3 to 5 days of completion.
Parties named in an official report taken by a member of the Schenectady Police Department can request that document by reporting in person to Police Headquarters with a legal photo ID matching the named party in the report. Schenectady Police Headquarters is located at 531 Liberty Street Schenectady NY 12305, please note while the Police Department is open 24/7 year-round, Records Requests are kindly requested only between the hours of 8am and 4pm Monday through Friday.
If the report is that of an Auto Accident, in addition to requesting Auto Accidents in person 3 to 5 days after the incident, Accidents Reports are available from either Carfax or LexisNexis links to either are available below. Reports are sent to both sites for your convenience.
Records Requests where persons are not named in the document can be requested via New York State Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). This process is managed by the City of Schenectady Law Department who uses Gov QA. FOIL FAQ can be found here.
Local Records Request / Letter of Good Conduct
Parties needing a local records request shall report in person to Schenectady Police Headquarters with current Photo ID and the appropriate fee and complete in full and sign the records request form.
Current Fees as of June 1st, 2023, are as follows:
Background Check for arrests and convictions in the City of Schenectady $20.00
Letter of Good Conduct $20.00
These fees are payable prior to completion of the request and are not refunded should a letter of Good Conduct be unable to be completed.
